The NRA Defensive Pistol Course will focus on the techniques needed to develop a defensive mindset. The goal of the course will be to develop the knowledge, skills, and attitude necessary to carry and use a concealed pistol ethically, responsibly and with confidence. As a result of participating in this course, the student will be able to explain and demonstrate the following: how to apply the NRA Rules for Safe Gun Handling when carrying a concealed firearm; basic principles of concealment; the difference between cover and concealment; drawing from the holster; levels of mental awareness; developing the proper mindset when using a pistol for personal protection; clearing common stoppages; use of pocket pistols; and more. Students will receive the NRA Guide to the Basics Of Personal Protection Outside The Home handbook, NRA Gun Safety Rules brochure and the NRA Defensive Pistol certificate.

Documentation Requirements

Please have prove of having taken a basic pistol course or have your CHL on you to prove you have taken a basic course. 

The instructor requires a copy of your CCW permit once you register.

Pre-requisites (have one of both of these)

  • Be a valid CHL holder
  • NRA Basic Pistol Shooting Course (minimum)
Equipment Required
  • A Handgun Of Your Choice (.380acp, 9mm, .38 Special .40S&W or .45acp) Preferably The One You Carry or Your Home Defense Gun
  • Holster (Outside The Waistband / Strong side holster is preferred for those new to this course)
  • NO Shoulder holsters or Crossdraw Holsters will be Allowed In This Class
  • NO Blackhawk SERPA holsters will be allowed in this class, unless you are an LEO and your department requires you to use them on duty. We prefer Safariland ALS holsters for retention holsters.
  • 1 Spare magazine more if you have them, it will save time on the range
  • Ear & Eye Protection
  • Magazine Holster / Pouch
  • 300 rounds of ammunition minimum preferably 400 rounds
  • Notebook or Notepad & Pen for class
  • Snacks / Drinks / Lunch
  • A Good Attitude
