Equipment Information and Requirements
FOR NM CCW CLASSES:
This checklist represents absolute minimum requirements for equipment and firearm capability.
If these requirements are not met you will not be allowed to take the NM CCW class, the NM CCW Refresher, or the NM CCW Renewal:
A firm leather or nylon gun belt is a requirement. There are a number of companies making such belts. Click here for some ideas and samples.
Personally, I love these belts and have several.
Semi-autos must have slide lock-back capability
Semi-auto magazines must have a minimum capacity of 6 rounds
You must bring at least 3 functional magazines for semi-autos - more is better.
Please do not sign up for the class if you have only one magazine.
Holsters must cover the trigger guard
Factory ammo only...no hand or home reloads
No single-action revolvers, e.g. Colt “Peacemaker” or similar “Old West” models
Double action revolvers will be fired via double-action – no single action firing allowed
Use of holsters is required
Firearms will not be supplied by the instructor to students.
Holsters must be worn on the strong-side and designed for the hip or thigh
Inside the Waist Band ("IWB") holsters are OK if they are strong side only
Bring at least 25 rounds of ammunition for each firearm with which you wish to qualify (up to 2 firearms). Again, DO NOT LOAD IT.
My definition of "loaded" is that if I see your firearm with a magazine inserted into the mag well, I consider that "loaded."
The following types of holsters are not allowed in this class for safety reasons:
Appendix carry
Small of the back
Shoulder
Chest
Cross draw
Fanny pack
Bellyband
Purse or over the shoulder bag
Ankle
IMPORTANT!
By accepting the above requirements, you understand that if one or more are not complied with, you may not be allowed to continue in the class. If you are asked to leave the NM CCW class, your paid fee will not be refunded.
FOR NM CCW AND ALL OTHER CLASSES
Bring:
Eye protection that protects from the side as well
No regular glasses
If you wear prescription glasses, there are large protective glasses that will fit over them.
NOTE: IF NRA BASIC PISTOL CLASS, THESE WILL BE PROVIDED IF YOU DO NOT HAVE EYE PROTECTION
Hearing protection
The electronic muff type of hearing protection is highly recommended.
NOTE: IF NRA BASIC PISTOL CLASS, HEARING PROTECTION WILL BE PROVIDED
Kneepads
There is [VOLUNTARY] kneeling in the NM CCW class and we may be on a cement surface.
NOTE: If you don't have the physical ability to kneel, please let me know.
Pen or pencil, as extensive note-taking is required.
A hat with some sort of brim such as a baseball cap for sun and ejected shell protection.
Water and/or snacks
Sunscreen in case we are outdoors
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
No sandals or other types of "open toed" footwear
Ammunition carriers (spare magazine holders or speed loader pouches) are not required, but highly recommended
When you come to class, ENSURE THE FIREARM IS UNLOADED!
If a firearm is not holstered, you may carry it:
With the slide locked back if a semi-auto
Or, with the cylinder open if a revolver
After you show up for class, do not handle or manipulate firearms without specific permission of an instructor.
I reserve the right to perform a cursory safety inspection of each firearm.
From the time you enter the class, you will be expected to be aware of firearm safety.
At a minimum, DO NOT POINT YOUR FIREARM AT ANYONE and KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER!
Do not wear low-cut shirts or blouses for better protection from hot ejected spent cartridge shells
