Description
The American Heart Association’s Heartsaver CPR/AED course trains participants to provide CPR and use an automated external defibrillator (AED) in a safe, timely, and effective manner. The content of this course reflects science and education from the American Heart Association Guidelines Update for CPR and Emergency Cardiovascular Care (ECC).
Heartsaver courses are designed for anyone with little or no medical training who wants to be prepared for an emergency in any setting.
Upon succesful course completion, students may obtain a course completion/certification card if needed for job, regulatory (for example, OSHA), or other requirements, for an additional fee. The Heartsaver course completion card is valid for 2 years.
Expectations and Outcomes
After completing this course, participants will be able to:
- Describe how high-quality CPR improves survival
- Explain the concepts of the Chain of Survival
- Recognize when someone needs CPR
- Perform high-quality CPR for an adult, child, or infant
- Describe how to perform CPR with help from others
- Give effective breaths using mouth-to-mouth or a mask for all age groups
- Demonstrate how to use an AED on an adult, child, or infant
- Describe when and how to help a choking adult, child, or infant
