Documentation Requirements
To prepare your LTC-104 forms ahead of time, I will need your name as it appears on your driver's license or state-issued ID, and that DL or ID number. Also, confirm that your correct address is reflected on your DL or ID.
Prior to class time, go to the Texas website for handgun licensing here: https://www.dps.texas.gov/section/handgun-licensing and begin your application process. After you have applied and paid your licensing fee, you will receive a service order within 10-15 days to have your fingerprints taken at any convenient IdentoGO location.
The instructor requires a copy of your Government Issued ID once you register.
Requirements
Please bring your own handgun and ammunition, and make sure your handgun is clean, properly lubricated, and in good working order. The proficiency qualification is a 50-round course of fire, with 20 rounds at 3 yards, 20 rounds at 7 yards, and 10 rounds at 15 yards, fired at a B-27 human silhouette target. Each round is worth 5 points, and you must score 175 or better to qualify (it's easy). I recommend everyone bring 100 rounds to ensure you have sufficient ammunition. Texas no longer requires specific handguns (revolver or semiautomatic) or calibers.
If you do not have your own handgun, or would prefer to use mine, I will provide a Glock 44 and 50 rounds of .22LR ammunition for you to shoot your proficiency qualification. See the Add-On for details.
There is also a written examination at the conclusion of the course, and you must score 70% or better to pass the course (18 out of 25 questions answered correctly).
If you have your own eye and ear protection, bring 'em. Foam ear plugs with a 29-33dB noise reduction rating (NRR) are fine, and you can buy these at any CVS or Walgreen's, and please make sure you use them and insert them into your ear canal properly. Muffs are also a good choice. Being a belt-and-suspenders guy, I typically wear both plugs and muffs, because I like my hearing and want to keep it. Your regular prescription glasses are sufficient for eye protection, but if you don't wear glasses, safety glasses from Home Depot or Lowe's work well. If you are going to go to the range on any regular basis (and I would strongly recommend it), having your own eye and ear protection is a must. A hat is also strongly recommended, and a ball cap or boonie hat are good choices. Also, no sandals or open-toed shoes.
