USCCA’s “Women’s Handgun & Self-Defense Fundamentals” is a welcoming and engaging training guide created by a woman for women who are seeking to begin, improve upon, or add to their firearms skills. With three distinct modules (Women's Basic Pistol, Women's Intermediate Pistol, and Women's Defensive Pistol), this course is designed to reach students who are brand new to firearms and those who are ready to learn more about defensive shooting. Basics and fundamentals will be introduced, reviewed, and then built upon, while also exploring situational awareness, common types of handguns, ammunition types, malfunctions, firearms handling skills, defensive pistol fundamentals, and the use of deadly force. Whether you’ve never touched a firearm, you’re looking for the next steps in your training, or you’ve chosen to learn about the skills, tools, and mindset needed to use firearms for self-defense, you can be prepared to carry confidently every day with tips and techniques from experienced women in the world of firearms.

Completion of this course will NOT provide participants with the certification to apply for the state of Iowa's CCW permit.

Topics Covered

Basics and fundamentals will be introduced, reviewed, and then built upon, while also exploring situational awareness, common types of handguns, ammunition types, malfunctions, firearms handling skills, defensive pistol fundamentals,deadly use of force.

Expectations and Outcomes

The objective of this course is to create an environment where participants feel safe, empowered and gain knowledge regarding responsible handgun ownership and handling. Completing this course will prepare participants for additional handgun training courses to include marksmanship and defensive pistol training. Students will receive a USCCA Women's Handgun & Self-Defense Fundamentals Certificate of Completion as well as knowledge and skill.

Documentation Requirements

This course does NOT require participants to have a CCW or handgun to participate.



Day 1 is in a classroom setting where training tools will be provided and utilized for training purposes. There will be NO live ammo in the class setting. For those participants who have a modern stricker fired pistol of their own, these handguns are permitted however will be checked for safety. Participants brining their own handguns will use their handguns during training and dry-fire.

No live ammunition will be allowed in the classroom. 

Day 2 will be held at the Range: Handgun rental is included in the fee for the course. Those participants who do not own or have a handgun to use may rent a handgun at the range for no extra cost. Purchase of ammunition from the range is required for all rentals and the participants are responsible for the purchase of ammo at the range. Eyes, ear protection and targets are provided at the range at no extra charge.

The instructor requires a copy of your Government Issued ID once you register.
