Description

Whether you are stepping into clay sports, preparing for your first hunt, getting started in practical competition, or setting up a shotgun for home defense, the shotgun remains one of the most versatile firearms available. However, managing recoil, understanding ammunition performance, and running the platform efficiently can present a steep learning curve.

Practical Shotgun Fundamentals is an intensive, 8-hour hands-on course designed to build confidence, efficiency, and skill with the modern shotgun. You will master the bio-mechanical techniques needed to dramatically reduce felt recoil, learn how to run your action smoothly under pressure, and perform a personal patterning exercise to know exactly how your shotgun and ammunition perform at various distances.

From safe mechanical operation and combat/port reloading to prepared home storage setups, this course gives you the foundation to run your shotgun effectively across any discipline.

Topics Covered

  • Safe Mechanical Handling: Master loading, unloading, action controls, and administrative handling for pump-action and semi-automatic shotguns.

  • Recoil Mitigation: Learn stance, body mechanics, and the "push-pull" method to shoot comfortably and control muzzle rise.

  • Live-Fire Patterning: Analyze shot dispersion, wad separation, and choke performance with your specific shotgun at 5 to 20 yards.

  • Practical Marksmanship: Transition smoothly between target engagements using beads, ghost rings, or red dot optics.

  • Reloading & Stoppage Management: Build fast, intuitive habits for emergency port loads, tube topping-off, and clearing malfunctions.

  • Readiness & Storage: Understand "Cruiser Ready" staging, home storage solutions, slings, lights, and maintenance requirements.

Expectations and Outcomes

By the end of this eight-hour course, students will gain complete confidence in safely handling, operating, and maintaining their shotgun. You will master proven bio-mechanical body position and the "push-pull" technique to dramatically reduce felt recoil and control muzzle rise. Through our hands-on live-fire exercise, you will pattern your individual shotgun and load combination, establishing precise visual knowledge of your shot dispersion from 5 to 20 yards. You will learn efficient reloading methods—including emergency port loading and tube replenishment—to keep your shotgun running smoothly under pressure. We will build practical marksmanship fundamentals so you can transition smoothly between targets, whether using beads, ghost rings, or red dot sights. Finally, you will leave with a clear understanding of prepared storage, "Cruiser Ready" home staging, and essential maintenance routines to keep your platform reliable across hunting, sporting, or defensive applications.

Requirements

Please review the required and recommended gear list below to ensure you are fully prepared for the course.

**This facility requires an additional $30.00 range fee.

  • Shotgun: 12-gauge or 20-gauge pump-action or semi-automatic shotgun in good working order. (Note: Break-action double-barrels are welcome, though some loading drills are optimized for tube-fed actions).

  • Chokes: Choke tubes appropriate for your shotgun (Improved Cylinder or Modified recommended for general range work) along with a choke wrench.

  • Sling: A standard 2-point sling is highly recommended for carry and weapon retention during range transitions.

  • Inert Dummy Ammunition: 5 to 10 inert dummy rounds / snap caps matching your shotgun’s gauge (for mechanical loading/unloading drills).

  • Birdshot / Target Loads: 100 rounds (Standard target loads, #7.5, #8, or #9 shot).

  • Buckshot: 15 rounds (Standard 8-pellet or 9-pellet 00 Buckshot).

  • Slugs: 5 rounds (Rifled foster slugs or sabotage slugs suitable for smoothbore/choked barrels).

  • Note: Please leave all live ammunition in your vehicle during the initial classroom session.

  • Eye Protection: Wrap-around impact-resistant safety glasses or shooting glasses.

  • Ear Protection: Electronic hearing protection is strongly recommended so you can hear range commands clearly while dampening gunfire.

  • Appropriate Attire:

    • High-collared shirt (crew neck or button-up) to prevent hot brass/hulls from entering clothing.

    • Sturdy pants (pants with belt loops/cargo pockets are helpful for carrying extra shells).

    • Closed-toe shoes or boots with good traction (no sandals or slip-ons).

    • Baseball cap or brimmed hat (helps deflect flying hulls and sun).

  • Shell Carrier: A side-saddle attached to the shotgun, a belt-mounted pouch, or a shot-card/bandolier to carry extra rounds during range drills.

  • Patterning Supplies: A marker/Sharpie and notebook to record target patterns and notes.

  • Cleaning & Maintenance: Basic field cleaning kit, gun oil/lubricant, and cleaning rod.

  • Comfort Items: Bottled water, hydration mix, snacks, lunch, sunblock, and bug spray.
