Description
Step-Up to Certification: 4-Week Firearms Safety & Practical Handgun Training is a structured program designed to take students from beginner fundamentals to full Virginia CHP certification. Over four weeks, participants will build confidence through:
Beginners Firearms Fundamentals — mastering grip, stance, sight alignment, and trigger control.
Basic Firearms Safety — understanding the universal safety rules and responsible handling.
Practical Handgun Skills — applying fundamentals in real-world scenarios with situational awareness.
VA CHP Certification Course — completing the classroom requirements to apply for your Virginia Concealed Handgun Permit.
This comprehensive pathway ensures students leave with both the knowledge and certification needed to carry responsibly and confidently.
Topics Covered
Schedule Structure:
Weeks 1–2: Classroom instruction (fundamentals, safety, legal responsibilities).
Weeks 3–4: Practical handgun training with live-fire exercises.

Students are expected to:

Follow all safety instructions without exception
Maintain a focused, respectful mindset throughout the course
Engage actively and ask questions when clarification is needed
By the end of this course, students will be able to:
Demonstrate the four universal safety rules with confidence
Safely load, unload, and clear their firearm
Maintain proper muzzle discipline and trigger-finger control
Apply foundational shooting techniques with improved accuracy
Execute safe holster presentation and re-holstering (if applicable)
Perform dry-fire and live-fire fundamentals effectively
Identify and correct common shooting errors
Understand the principles of situational awareness
Recognize pre-threat indicators and avoid unnecessary conflict
Apply conflict-avoidance and de-escalation concepts
Make more informed decisions about personal safety
Leave with a stronger sense of control, clarity, and responsibility
Understand their firearm, their gear, and their personal readiness level
Know how to continue training safely and effectively after the course
Upon successful completion of this course, students will receive a Certificate of Completion that may be used to apply for their respective state’s CHP / CCW / CCDW permit, depending on state requirements.

Documentation Requirements
?? Student Identification Requirement (All Classes)
ID Requirement:
All students are required to present valid, unexpired U.S. government-issued photo identification at the start of class — NO EXCEPTIONS.
Acceptable forms of ID include:
- State-issued driver’s license
- State-issued identification card
- U.S. passport
- U.S. military ID
Students who cannot provide valid identification will not be permitted to participate in the course. Enrollment and associated fees may be forfeited in accordance with the payment and attendance policy.
?? Payment & Registration Policy (All Classes)
- Full payment is required at the time of registration.
- Registration is not confirmed until payment is received.
- Course materials, instructor time, facility reservations, and administrative preparation are allocated in advance.
No refunds will be issued for:
- Failure to attend
- Failure to present valid ID
- Late arrival that prevents safe participation
- Removal from class due to unsafe behavior or non-compliance
?? Attendance & Rescheduling Policy
- Students unable to attend must notify the instructor at least 24 hours in advance to request rescheduling.
- One (1) reschedule may be granted at the instructor’s discretion, subject to availability.
- Requests made with less than 24 hours’ notice, or failure to appear without notice, will be treated as a no-show and all fees will be forfeited.
- Additional reschedule requests may require payment of a new course fee.
?? Court-Ordered Training Compliance (When Applicable)
For court-ordered or probation-directed training:
- Valid photo ID is mandatory for attendance verification and certificate issuance.
- Students are responsible for ensuring compliance with court-ordered deadlines.
- Certificates of completion and attendance verification are issued only upon successful completion of all required course components.
- Failure to comply with course policies may result in non-completion, which may be reported to the referring authority if required.
?? Safety & Conduct Policy (All Classes)
- The instructor reserves the right to pause or terminate training at any time due to unsafe behavior.
- Students may be removed from class for:
- Unsafe firearms handling
- Failure to follow instructions
- Impairment due to drugs or alcohol
- Disruptive or non-compliant conduct
Removal for safety or conduct reasons does not entitle the student to a refund.
?? Hardship Consideration Clause
Documented hardship situations (medical emergencies, verified court conflicts, or other extenuating circumstances) may be considered on a case-by-case basis.
- Requests must be communicated as soon as reasonably possible.
- Documentation may be required.
- Approval of hardship rescheduling or fee consideration is not guaranteed and remains at the sole discretion of the instructor.
- Repeated hardship requests may require coordination with the referring court or probation office.
The instructor requires a copy of your Government Issued ID once you register.
Requirements
Students are encouraged to bring their Everyday Carry (EDC) firearm to class. All firearms must arrive unloaded and will be inspected during check-in.
EDC handgun (unloaded; no ammunition in the classroom)
Quality holster
No flimsy, soft-sided, or collapsible holsters
Holster must fully cover the trigger guard
Snap Caps / Dummy Rounds – 10 recommended
Training ammunition – 100 rounds minimum
Eye and ear protection
May be rented at the range if needed
Range waiver must be completed prior to class (Students will receive the link or form after registration.)
Students must be legally able to possess a firearm.
Students must follow all safety instructions at all times.

Water and weather-appropriate clothing for range time
