Description
A Maryland Handgun Qualification License (HQL) class is a mandatory 4-hour safety and legal course required to purchase, rent, or receive a regulated firearm. It consists of both classroom instruction and a practical hands-on or live-fire component.

- State Firearm Law:
- What constitutes a regulated firearm.
- Proper purchasing and transfer procedures.
- Locations where you are legally permitted to carry or transport firearms.
- Requirements for carry permits, prohibited individuals, and laws relating to minors.
- Permissible levels of force and the use of deadly force.
- Home Firearm Safety:
- General handgun safety in the home.
- Preventing unauthorized access to minors.
- Proper locking/storage techniques and the use of safety devices (e.g., secure lock boxes).
- Handgun Mechanisms and Operation:
- Proper operation, cleaning, and maintenance.
- Differences between revolvers and semi-automatic handguns.
- Safe handling, including loading and unloading ammunition.
- Hands-On/Live-Fire Practical:
- A practical demonstration verifying you can safely operate, load, and fire a handgun. (State law requires safely firing at least one round)
