Description

Successful completion of this 1½-hour class meets the training requirement under Florida Statute 790.06 to apply for a Florida Concealed Weapon or Firearm License. This is a PERMIT-ONLY course — it meets the legal minimum; it is not a defensive-use or tactics class. If you want training on deploying a firearm in a defensive situation, please enroll in our supplemental defensive courses.

Important — Required Competence (read carefully)

Students MUST arrive already proficient in the Four Universal Firearm Safety Rules and basic handgun fundamentals. You will be required to demonstrate safe, competent handling of your firearm. If you cannot confidently perform the items below, this course is not appropriate — please take Basic Handgun first.

Four Universal Safety Rules (you must know and follow these)

  1. Treat every firearm as if it is loaded.

  2. Never point the muzzle at anything you are not willing to destroy.

  3. Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on target and you intend to fire.

  4. Be sure of your target and what is beyond it.

Handgun fundamentals you must be able to demonstrate

  • Safely load, unload, and clear your handgun.

  • Work the action (racking, cycling, operating the controls) reliably.

  • Demonstrate safe muzzle discipline, trigger finger discipline, and proper stances/grip.

  • Place 25 rounds on target at 5 yards (this course is not instructional range time — that level of accuracy and handling is expected).

What the class covers

  • Classroom instruction required by Florida law to qualify for the permit.

  • Review and verification of safe handling and competency (no instruction in defensive tactics or use of force beyond statutory requirements).

Equipment & safety gear

  • Students may bring their own firearm unloaded and encased.

  • If you do not have a firearm, one may be borrowed from our rental fleet at no additional cost.

  • Hearing and eye protection are required and can be supplied if needed.

Recommendation

We strongly encourage anyone intending to carry to pursue additional training beyond this legal minimum. If training weren’t important, military and law enforcement would stop training after the first box of ammunition. Prepare yourself to prevail — enroll in our Basic Handgun or Defensive Handgun  courses for practical shooting instruction and self-defense preparation.

All participants must have a range waiver on file prior to taking the class.
