Description

Your safety plan should be more than simply owning a firearm or reacting when something goes wrong. Developing a Personal & Home Protection Plan is a classroom-based course designed to help students develop a realistic, proactive approach to protecting themselves, their families, and their homes.

This course focuses on situational awareness, avoidance, conflict prevention, home security, family preparedness, defensive options, basic firearms safety, and the legal considerations surrounding the use of force. Students will examine how everyday decisions can reduce their exposure to danger and how preparation can improve their ability to respond when avoidance is no longer possible.

The course will also introduce students to relevant Florida law, including Florida Statute Chapter 776, which addresses the justifiable use of force and related self-defense provisions. Legal concepts are presented as educational information and are not a substitute for advice from a qualified attorney.

No live-fire training is required for this foundational classroom course.

Topics Covered

Key Topics Include:

  • Avoidance is a successful defensive strategy.
  • Awareness and preparation can provide valuable time to recognize and respond to developing situations.
  • Your home should have multiple layers of security, rather than relying on a single lock, alarm, camera, or defensive tool.
  • Every household should have a communication and emergency plan that family members understand.
  • Defensive tools—including firearms—come with significant responsibilities and should be selected and used within the individual's training, circumstances, and legal obligations.
  • Basic firearms safety applies at all times, whether a firearm is being handled, stored, transported, or used for defensive purposes.
  • Understanding the legal boundaries of self-defense is an essential part of responsible preparation.
  • Florida Statute Chapter 776 will be discussed to provide students with a foundational understanding of Florida's self-defense and use-of-force laws.
  • A defensive mindset is not about looking for confrontation—it is about recognizing danger, avoiding unnecessary conflict, protecting yourself and others, and making responsible decisions when faced with a threat.
