Description
A focused, two-day Practical Carbine course designed to turn basic familiarity with an AR-pattern rifle into usable, confidence-building skills for defensive and precision work from 7 to 100 yards. Students will establish a primary 50-yard zero, practice supported and unsupported firing positions, conduct efficient magazine changes and immediate action for malfunctions, perform shoulder transitions for use of cover, and practice movement and shooting under controlled stress. The course emphasizes measurable standards and practical drills so students leave with a clear training plan.
Topics Covered
- Establishing and confirming zero (primary zero at 50 yards; optional 100-yard confirmation)
- Supported and unsupported firing positions: prone, sitting (75 yds), kneeling (50 yds)
- Mechanical offset for close-quarters work (sighting/point-of-aim adjustments, holdovers, and practical engagement techniques inside 25 yards)
- Practical magazine-change techniques and decision rules for pistol transition inside 25 yards
- Immediate action (Tap-Rack-Bang) and the Rip Drill — procedures, hands-on practice, and diagnostics
- Strong-side / weak-side switch-shoulder shooting for use of cover
- Movement-to-contact drills: lateral turns, 180° transitions, shooting on the move
- Preventive maintenance, basic care and field cleaning (daily/after-use checks, bore care, lubrication points, and simple troubleshooting)
- Trigger control, sight management, and shot process for carbine distances (7–100 yards)
- Safety, range discipline, and equipment selection for carbine operations
Expectations and Outcomes
- Establish a reliable primary zero at 50 yards and perform a 100-yard confirmation using stable prone techniques.
- Apply mechanical offset and sighting adjustments effectively for close-quarters engagements and understand when to rely on point-of-aim vs. sight picture.
- Deliver accurate fire from kneeling and seated positions at the prescribed distances.
- Perform fast, indexed magazine changes under time and distance constraints and know when to transition to pistol inside 25 yards.
- Diagnose and clear common malfunctions using Tap-Rack-Bang and the Rip Drill under stress.
- Execute controlled shoulder transitions and employ cover from either shoulder.
- Move laterally and turn 180° while maintaining muzzle discipline and acceptable accuracy across 7–100 yards.
- Perform basic preventive maintenance and field cleaning, and recognize when to pull the rifle from service for professional armorer attention.
