Training US Marines and civilians since 1982

I am a civilian personal safety instructor.  I was an enlisted US Marine for 4 years, with another 4 in various reserve capacities, 2 of those with the US Army. No Marine Recon, Special Forces, or other sexy Special Ops stuff, just you average Nuclear, Biological and Chemical Warfare Defense Specialist 5711 (54E for my Army service).  I spent much of my time in the USMC training enlisted, staff NCO's and officers on how to keep their units safe in contaminated and hostile environments.  This is where I realised just how fulfilling it is to help others learn what you know, especially when it means their safety and that of those who are with them.

Among the other work I did after the military included Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response - dealing with toxic, hazardous and sometimes energetic materials.  I was also able to spend several years working private contract security in and around NYC.

A large portion of the last 20 years has been involved providing occupational health and safety consulting and training for the construction, petrochemical, pharmaceutical, healthcare and other industries.

Over last decade I, like many others have become more concerned with violence in our workplaces, schools, healthcare facilities as well as when we are out and about in our personal lives. It is these concerns that drive my desire to train as many people as I can to take charge of their own safety.  There are may ways we can learn to do this. We also know that the law of the land and the courts expect that lethal force be our "last resort".  What does a process like this look like?

• Practice Situational Awareness - individually, or when in groups
• Trust your instincts - if it feels wrong or unsafe, treat it as such
• Deescalate the situation - don't let the need to prove you're right threaten your safety
• Defend and Protect - Yes that is what we need to prepare for, when we require that skillset it has to be second nature
• Render Aid - to ourselves and those around us that may be injured
• Properly Report - and be prepared for the aftermath, both legally and mentally
