Description

Beginning August 1, 2026, Colorado Senate Bill 25-003 (SB25-003) requires most individuals purchasing certain semiautomatic gas-operated firearms to successfully complete a state-approved Firearm Safety Course before purchasing an eligible firearm. After successfully completing the required training, eligible students may apply for a Colorado Firearms Eligibility Card through any Colorado sheriff's office.

US Firearms Training Academy offers Colorado-compliant Firearm Safety Courses designed to satisfy the state's training requirements while providing students with a comprehensive understanding of firearm safety, responsible ownership, Colorado firearm laws, secure firearm storage, and safe firearm handling.

We offer both the 12-hour Firearm Safety Course for first-time applicants and the 4-hour Firearm Safety Refresher Course for eligible students who possess a qualifying Hunter Education Certificate. Students must successfully complete the state-required written examination with a passing score of 90% or higher to receive a Certificate of Completion.

The Colorado Firearm Safety Course is designed to provide students with the knowledge and practical understanding necessary to safely own, handle, transport, and store firearms while meeting Colorado's statutory training requirements under SB25-003. Through instructor-led classroom training, students develop a strong foundation in firearm safety, legal responsibilities, and responsible firearm ownership.

Topics covered include:

• Universal Firearm Safety Rules – Learn the fundamental rules of safe firearm handling, safe muzzle control, trigger discipline, and techniques for preventing negligent discharges.
• Safe Firearm Handling – Understand how to safely load, unload, verify, and handle semiautomatic firearms while developing safe habits that can be applied in everyday firearm ownership.
• Colorado Firearm Laws – Review Colorado laws relating to firearm possession, transportation, prohibited persons, prohibited locations, transfers, and the legal responsibilities of firearm owners.
• Safe Firearm Storage – Learn proper storage methods, child access prevention, theft prevention, and strategies for securing firearms when not in use.
• Conflict Avoidance & De-escalation – Develop practical techniques for avoiding unnecessary confrontations and making responsible decisions during stressful situations.
• Situational Awareness – Learn how awareness, planning, and sound judgment contribute to responsible firearm ownership and personal safety.
• Firearm Transportation – Review safe transportation practices and Colorado laws regarding transporting firearms.
• Firearm Maintenance Basics – Understand routine inspection, cleaning, lubrication, and maintenance procedures that help keep firearms safe and reliable.
• Responsible Firearm Ownership – Discuss the ethical and legal responsibilities that accompany firearm ownership, including safe decision-making and accountability.
• State-Required Written Examination – Students must successfully complete the required written examination with a minimum passing score of 90% before receiving a Certificate of Completion.

Upon successful completion, students receive a Certificate of Completion that may be used when applying for a Colorado Firearms Eligibility Card through any Colorado sheriff's office.
