The NRA Basic Pistol Course is a comprehensive course designed to teach students the knowledge, skills, and attitude necessary for owning and using a pistol safely and responsibly. This course is appropriate for individuals who have little to no experience with pistols or those who are looking to refresh their skills.

Throughout the course, students will learn about firearm safety rules, pistol parts and operation, ammunition, shooting fundamentals, cleaning and maintenance, and safe storage options. Students will also have the opportunity to practice basic shooting techniques and engage in live-fire exercises under the guidance of an experienced instructor.

In addition to hands-on training, the course will cover essential safety topics such as safe loading and unloading procedures, proper handling and storage of firearms, and recognizing and responding to malfunctions. Participants will also learn about the legal and ethical responsibilities of gun ownership, including laws regarding the use of lethal force in self-defense situations.

The NRA Basic Pistol Course is taught by certified NRA instructors who have extensive experience in pistol shooting and instruction. Students who successfully complete the course will receive an NRA certificate of completion, which is recognized by many states as proof of firearm safety training.

Expectations and Outcomes: By the end of the NRA Basic Pistol Course, students can expect to accomplish the following:

  1. Knowledge and understanding: Students will acquire comprehensive knowledge of firearm safety rules, pistol parts and operation, ammunition components, loading and unloading procedures, shooting positions, stoppages, safe storage, handgun cleaning, and basic marksmanship skills. They will develop a solid understanding of the fundamentals of pistol shooting and the application of safe gun handling rules.

  2. Proficiency in shooting: Through hands-on training and live-fire exercises, students will practice basic shooting techniques and develop marksmanship skills. They will learn and apply the necessary skills to shoot accurately and safely.

  3. Safety and responsible gun ownership: The course emphasizes the importance of firearm safety, including proper handling and storage of firearms. Students will understand the legal and ethical responsibilities of gun ownership, including laws governing the use of lethal force in self-defense situations.

  4. NRA certificate of completion: Students who successfully complete the course will receive an NRA certificate of completion. This certificate serves as proof of their participation and successful completion of the NRA Basic Pistol Course. It is recognized by many states as evidence of firearm safety training.

Important Note: Live ammunition is strictly prohibited in the classroom. Students should come prepared with the required equipment and ammunition specified by the course. The focus of the course is on firearm safety, proper handling, and marksmanship skills development.

Required equipment:

  • Hearing Protection (electronic/noise cancelling type recommended)
  • Eye Protection (shooting/safety/ballistic type recommended)
  • Billed Hat (baseball cap or similar style)
  • Sturdy Footwear (closed toe boots/athletic shoes – no open toe shoes/sandals/flip-flops)
  • Crew Neck Style Shirts (short or long sleeve – no tank tops or low cut shirts)
  • Appropriate Weather Clothing/Gear (wet and/or cold weather clothing/footwear if applicable)
  • Serviceable Semi-automatic Pistol or Revolver

200 Rounds of Ammunition Minimum (caliber specific to the firearm being used – factory loaded only, no reloads)

  • Cleaning Kit (specific to the firearm being used)
  • Food/Snacks (lunch/breaks)
  • Water/Sports Drink (for the duration of the course)
  • Note Taking Materials

*no holster is required for the course, all live fire shooting will be conducted from a range table in accordance with NRA Basics of Pistol Shooting course requirements*
