Description
This intensive one-day course is designed strictly for alumni of our Long Range Shooting and Fundamentals of Ballistics class, or for very experienced long range shooters upon instructor approval. It bridges the gap between the "Why We Miss" curriculum (up to 525 yards) and our full Coastal ELR curriculum (up to 1 mile).
This is an opportunity for well-prepared students to see the ballistic variables they learned in the Fundamentals class applied at extended distances. We will move beyond the 500-yard line and introduce intermediate border line ELR concepts—such as early transonic flight behaviors, aerodynamic jump, and advanced wind estimation—without bogging down in the complete 1-mile curriculum.
Please note: This course is a prerequisite for our 1-Mile ELR class later this year.
Topics Covered
This ONE-DAY course bridges the gap between our Why We Miss curriculum (525 yards max) and the full Coastal ELR curriculum (1 Mile). Because we are moving into distances where minute variables compound exponentially, the class will focus heavily on:
- Primary Trajectory Validation (Zero Offsets): Moving beyond a basic 100-yard zero to find that hidden "half of a click." You will learn to validate your exact X and Y intercepts to correct subtle zero or scope tracking shifts before they cause misses at extended ranges.
- Gravity-Driven Validation (Muzzle Velocity Truing):At intermediate distances where gravity is the primary influence on the bullet's path, you will learn to true your muzzle velocity in your ballistic solver based on actual physical drops.
Drag-Driven Validation (Ballistic Coefficient Truing): As we push toward the 1,000-yard line, the bullet's drag becomes the dominant variable. We will cover why relying on factory BC averages is a trap, and how to properly true your Ballistic Coefficient for your specific rifle.
Extended Range Deflection: Internalizing and accounting for forces that are invisible at 500 yards, including Spin Drift, Coriolis effect, and Aerodynamic Jump (understanding how crosswinds affect your vertical point of impact).
Advanced Wind Variations: Moving past basic wind calls to read mirage, interpret multiple wind zones across the range, and calculate wind values at your bullet's Maximum Ordinate (the highest point of its trajectory, where the wind often behaves completely differently than at the shooter's position).
Advanced Spotting Strategies: Even though this range features electronic scoring, spotting remains just as crucial as pressing the trigger. You will spend significant time behind the glass learning to spot trace by looking above the target, dialing back magnification to reduce mirage and increase field-of-view, and employing effective spotter/shooter dialogue to bracket targets and call rapid corrections.
Expectations and Outcomes
This is not a beginner class. We will not be providing basic support, basic troubleshooting, or hand-holding for unprepared students. You are expected to arrive with an understanding of trajectory validation, density altitude, and your ballistic solver.
Certificates will be awarded at class completion.

Requirements
Mandatory Pre-Class Homework:
To ensure the class moves at the required pace, all applicants must complete the following prior to arriving at Cool Acres:
Zero Confirmation: Confirm a perfect 100-yard zero on paper.
Software Setup: Input your exact rifle parameters, scope height, and current bullet BCs into your ballistic solver (Strelok, Chairgun Elite, Kestrel.).
Trajectory Validation: Independently validate your data out to at least 500 yards. You must know your true muzzle velocity and have your drops confirmed before the morning brief. (At this stage of the sport/hobby a chronograph is basically required.)
Required Gear:
A clean, functional precision rifle capable of accurately engaging targets to 1000 yards. (No rental guns will be available for this course).
A quality turret-adjustable tactical or long-range hunting scope.
At least 60-80 rounds of high-quality, match-grade ammunition specific to your rifle.
Smartphone or device with your required ballistic software already downloaded and configured.
Your notebook/logbook and the "Why We Miss" booklet from the Fundamentals class.
Rear bag, and a front bag or bipod.
Rifle/optic-specific tools (e.g., Allen wrenches, Torx drivers) for field adjustments.
Eye and ear protection.
Appropriate clothing and gear for a full day exposed to the elements.
