Description
What CRASE Means
CRASE = Civilian Response to Active Shooter Events.
It is a structured training program that teaches everyday civilians how to respond during an active shooter or active threat situation. The course is widely used by law enforcement agencies, schools, businesses, and community groups.
Core Purpose
CRASE provides strategies, guidance, and a proven survival plan for violent critical incidents. It is not a tactical course — it focuses on decision-making, mindset, and immediate actions civilians can take before law enforcement arrives
The ADD Model (Avoid – Deny – Defend)
This is the foundation of CRASE:
- Avoid — Be aware of your surroundings, recognize danger early, and create distance.
- Deny — Barricade, lock doors, and make it difficult for the attacker to reach you.
- Defend — As a last resort, take action to protect your life.
This model is considered more accessible and compliant for schools and workplaces compared to “Run–Hide–Fight.”
