The NRA Personal Protection In The Home course - Students should expect to shoot approximately 100 rounds of ammunition. Students will learn basic defensive shooting skills, strategies for home safety and responding to a violent confrontation, firearms and the law, how to choose a handgun for self-defense, and continued opportunities for skill development.

• Defensive mindset vs. target shooting

• Differences between marksmanship and defensive accuracy

• The role of mental awareness in home defense

• Drawing from concealment (if applicable)

• Flash sight picture and point shooting

• Speed vs. accuracy in close-range situations

• Legal use of force and deadly force (overview)

• Understanding "Castle Doctrine" and "duty to retreat" laws

• Interacting with law enforcement after a self-defense incident

• Safe room planning and family defense plans

• Layers of security: lighting, locks, alarms

• Entry points and defensive zones inside the home

• Developing a personal protection plan

• What to do during and after a confrontation

• Understanding physical and psychological reactions

• Factors in choosing a suitable firearm for defense

• Ammo selection and stopping power considerations

• Holsters, safes, and quick-access storage for home use

Expectations and Outcomes

Students will receive the NRA Guide to the Basics of Personal Protection In The Home handbook, NRA Gun Safety Rules brochure, the Winchester/NRA Marksmanship Qualification booklet, and course completion certificate.

Requirements

Prerequisite: NRA Basic Pistol Course Certificate, NRA FIRST Steps Course Certificate, NRA pistol competitive shooting qualification card, military DD 214 with pistol qualification,  Maryland HQL or passing the Pre-Course Assessment.

Student must have their own firearm, holster and ammo to participate in this course training.
