Description

This course provides the required instruction and supervised live-fire qualification for shooters seeking authorization to draw and fire from the holster at The Brigade Shooting Company. Instruction focuses on safe holster use, proper draw mechanics, muzzle and trigger discipline, and deliberate re-holstering in accordance with range policies.

The course includes a classroom safety and procedures block followed by instructor-led live-fire drills on IDPA or IPSC targets. Students are evaluated on safety, consistency, and control.

Upon successful completion, participants are authorized to draw and fire from the holster at The Brigade Shooting Company during regular range hours and during special activities and classes.

This focused, live-fire authorization course is designed for shooters who want to safely and responsibly draw and fire from the holster at The Brigade Shooting Company.

The course emphasizes strict safety standards, consistent draw mechanics, and controlled accuracy, not speed for speed’s sake. Students begin with a structured classroom session covering holster safety, range policy, and draw fundamentals, followed by supervised live-fire qualification on IDPA or IPSC targets.

Expectations and Outcomes

Students are expected to follow all safety rules, range policies, and instructor commands at all times. A strong emphasis is placed on muzzle discipline, trigger finger awareness, controlled draw mechanics, and deliberate re-holstering. This course prioritizes safety and consistency over speed, and students must demonstrate a willingness to learn, accept coaching, and make corrections as directed.

Upon successful completion, students will have demonstrated the ability to safely draw and fire from the holster under supervision and in accordance with The Brigade Shooting Company’s standards. Successful students will be authorized to draw and fire from the holster at The Brigade Shooting Company during approved hours and activities. This authorization is range-specific and will be revoked if safety standards are not maintained.

Documentation Requirements

  • Government-issued photo ID (Driver License, State ID, CCW/CHL, or passport)
  • Proof of prior training:
  • Certificate of completion from First Shots, Next Shots, or another recognized basic handgun course
  • OR documented experience showing safe firearm handling knowledge (subject to instructor approval)

The instructor requires a copy of your Government Issued ID once you register.

  • Defensive handgun
  • Strong-side holster - IWB, OWB, Appendix styles only – please note the list of prohibited holster types:
    • Appendix carry holsters
    • Cross-draw holsters
    • Shoulder holsters
    • Small-of-back holsters
    • Serpa-style or index-finger–release retention holsters
    • Bra, thigh, or ankle holsters
    • Collapsible or soft cloth holsters
    • Holsters that do not fully cover the trigger guard
    • Holsters that collapse when the firearm is removed
    • Holsters that require the muzzle to sweep the body during the draw or re-holster
      • These holsters are not allowed on The Brigade Shooting Company range and cannot be used during this class.
  • Sturdy gun belt (must support firearm and gear)
  • 3 magazines minimum
  • Magazine pouch
  • 250 rounds of ammunition (bring extra if you'd like to shoot more!)
  • Electronic hearing protection (required)
  • Eye protection
  • Weather-appropriate range clothing
  • Brimmed hat or ball cap
  • Notetaking materials
  • Water, snacks, and a positive attitude 😊
