NRA Basic Pistol + Maryland Wear & Carry Training

Build your pistol skills and prepare to meet Maryland’s Wear & Carry training requirements in one course. This program combines NRA Basic Pistol instruction with Maryland firearms law, safe handgun handling, and the required live-fire qualification. It is open to both Maryland residents and nonresidents seeking a Maryland Wear & Carry permit.

Maryland HQL training is also included for Maryland residents. The HQL and Wear & Carry permits require separate applications and approval by the Maryland State Police.

Before class: Complete all assigned online training modules prior to attending. Students must complete every required portion of the course, including in-person instruction and live-fire qualification, to receive training documentation.

• Essential firearm-safety rules

• Pistol parts, types, and safe operation

• Ammunition knowledge and malfunction identification

• Loading, unloading, and safe handgun handling

• Proper grip, stance, sight alignment, and trigger control

• Fundamentals of accurate pistol shooting

• Selecting, cleaning, maintaining, and securely storing a handgun

• Maryland firearm-transportation and prohibited-location laws

• Maryland self-defense and use-of-force principles

• Concealed-carry responsibilities and situational awareness

• Conflict avoidance and responsible decision-making

• Hands-on pistol-handling exercises

• Live-fire range instruction and Maryland qualification

Expectations and Outcomes

Students completing all required classroom, hands-on, and live-fire components will receive:

• An NRA Basics of Pistol Shooting course completion credential

• The required Maryland Wear & Carry training documentation

• Documentation for a Maryland Handgun Qualification License (HQL), when applicable
