Description
Duration: 8 hours of in-person instruction by an MSP-approved Qualified Handgun Instructor
Content includes:
State firearms laws (including any updates)
Home firearm safety
Handgun mechanisms and operation
Live-fire proficiency—minimum 70% accuracy
Basic Practical Handgun Course (=?25 rounds, =?15?yards) for civilian permit holders
Exemptions: Active/retired law enforcement, military, instructors, or those who’ve completed an MSP-approved course in the past 2 years
Topics Covered
State Firearms Law Updates: Transportation, legal use of force, carry responsibilities
Firearm Safety Procedures: Safe handling rules, home storage, dry-fire technique
Marksmanship Fundamentals: Grip, stance, trigger control, sight picture/alignment
Live-Fire Qualification: Culminates in MSP-mandated proficiency test (70% pass rate)
Expectations and Outcomes
Upon completing the 8-hour renewal you will:
Understand current Maryland firearms laws, including legal use of force and transport regulations.
Demonstrate safe firearm handling in classroom and on-range settings.
Display proper grip, stance, trigger control, and sight alignment.
Perform dry-fire drills suitable for at-home maintenance of skills.
Qualify via the MSP 70% proficiency test.
Receive the MSP-29-14 Certified Qualification Score Sheet, required for permit renewal submission.
