My goal for this article is to simplify this down to a few key points and make the process a whole lot simpler and less intimidating for the first-time handgun buyer.
- Decide what the intended purpose of this gun is. This will help you narrow down some options like size, caliber, accessories, holster and storage choices. Reliability is of utmost importance – would you trust your life with a cheap gun?
- Concealed carry (may be on the slimmer, smaller side)
- Home defense (can be a larger gun)
- Range fun (might be a smaller caliber)
- Competition (will be a larger, heavier choice)
- Multiple visits to your local range are in order to help you narrow down which gun is right for you. No one else can tell you which one is right for you. Don’t be afraid to tell the range officers that you are trying different guns to decide on one to purchase-they are very helpful and knowledgeable.
- Does the gun fit comfortably in my hand?
- Can I grip the gun with all of my fingers?
- Can I reach the magazine release & slide lock?
- Can I reach the trigger?
- Can I rack the slide?
- Can I manage the recoil?
- Can I see the front sight? Will I need an optic?
- Research your state and federal laws regarding:
- Concealed carry and open carry
- Stand your ground laws and castle doctrine
- Gun storage
- Gun-free zones
- Transporting firearms
- Reciprocity – which other states honor your state’s permit to carry?
- Magazine capacity and ammunition types
See how to choose the right ammunition!
- Apply for your concealed carry permit (even if you have not decided to carry concealed yet).
- Cleaning your guns regularly is an important chore that most folks don’t think about when they take on the responsibility of gun ownership.
Owning a firearm is a significant responsibility, and it emphasizes the importance of developing proficiency and safety through regular practice and training.
