About Tip of the Spear Training Group
Denver is a highly decorated combat veteran and certified firearms expert whose career spans the globe, from the most demanding theaters of war to elite tactical instruction. With over two decades dedicated to the mastery of small arms and instructional methodology, Denver brings unparalleled depth to every course taught at Tip of the Spear Training Group.
Denver served thirteen years in the United States Marine Corps as an Infantry Rifleman (0311), gaining his foundational expertise under the highest standards of military professionalism. His proficiency was formally honed during his critical assignment to the Marksmanship Training Unit (MTU) in Parris Island, SC, where he served as a Primary Marksmanship Instructor (PMI) and a Combat Marksmanship Coach's Course Instructor.
His diverse Marine Corps service included deployments with 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marines, and combat service with 3rd Battalion, 1st Marines, which provided him with specialized experience and certifications in:
-
Military Operations on Urban Terrain (MOUT)
-
Jungle Warfare, Cold Weather Warfare, and Desert Warfare
-
Airborne (Basic Jump School)
Denver's exceptional service was recognized with numerous awards, including the Purple Heart Medal, the Combat Action Ribbon, and the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal (4th award).
Upon transitioning from the USMC in 2012, Denver immediately entered the high-threat diplomatic security sector, becoming a certified Firearms Instructor (FI) for the Department of State in Baghdad, Iraq. Further elevating his instructional credentials, he served as a Range Master Firearms Instructor (RMFI) and Training Manager for the Department of State in Kabul, Afghanistan.
In these roles, Denver developed and executed comprehensive training programs, specializing in teaching:
-
The safe and effective employment of the Glock 19 and M4 Service Carbine.
-
Instructional mastery of the Glock 19 shooting platform for TCN security personnel (from Uganda, Kenya, and Nepal/Gurkhas).
After his international career, Denver returned home and rapidly built a robust civilian instruction profile, acquiring certifications as an NRA Certified Pistol, Rifle, Shotgun, and Home Firearm Safety Instructor. He further expanded his defensive expertise by serving with the Brevard County Sheriff's Office School Marshal Program.
In 2018, Denver founded Tip of the Spear Training Group, where he currently serves as the Chief Instructor. He is also certified by the USCCA as an Instructor for Concealed Carry, Home Defense Fundamentals, and Countering The Mass Shooter Threat.
Denver is committed to leveraging his unique, multi-faceted experience—from combat to diplomatic security—to deliver elite, realistic, and ethical training, enabling every client to become "harder to kill."

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Are there prerequisites for the Handgun or Defensive Tactics courses? A: Yes, safety and proficiency are paramount. For most Intermediate Handgun courses (Level 7 and up), completion of a foundational course (such as our Handgun 1-4 series) or equivalent verifiable training is mandatory. You must be safe, competent with your weapon system, and familiar with basic fundamentals before enrolling in advanced tactics or scenario-based classes.
Q: How is Tip of the Spear Training Group different from other local training companies? A: Our curriculum is built on real-world operational experience. Denver's background as a Primary Marksmanship Instructor (PMI) in the US Marine Corps and his experience developing training programs for the U.S. Department of State in high-threat environments (Iraq and Afghanistan) ensures that our instruction goes beyond competition shooting or static range work. We focus heavily on defensive mindset, high-stress problem-solving, and utilizing real-world tactics.
Q: What is your policy on inclement weather? A: We train in most weather conditions, including rain and high heat. Real-world defensive encounters do not wait for ideal weather. Please dress appropriately and prepare for the conditions. In the event of dangerous conditions (lightning, high winds), the Chief Instructor will pause or reschedule the course, and students will be offered a transfer or full refund per the Cancellation Policy.
Q: Do you offer private or group training sessions? A: Yes. We offer fully customized private instruction for individuals, families, and small groups. Please contact us directly to discuss your specific training goals and scheduling needs.
Q: What gear is mandatory for range courses? A: At minimum, you must bring:
-
Your chosen firearm, cleaned and lubricated.
-
A sturdy, dominant-side holster (IWB or OWB, no Serpa style or floppy nylon).
-
A rigid belt designed to support the firearm's weight.
-
At least 3 magazines (or speed loaders for revolvers).
-
Electronic hearing protection and wrap-around eye protection.
-
Adequate hydration (water/sports drinks).
Q: What is the minimum round count for most Handgun courses? A: Most of our 3-4 hour Handgun sessions (Levels 7, 8, 10, etc.) require a minimum of 300 rounds. Our longer, more advanced classes may require up to 500 rounds. Always check the specific course description before purchasing ammunition.
Q: Can I use reloaded or steel-cased ammunition? A: No. For safety and range liability reasons, we require all ammunition to be factory-loaded brass-cased ammunition. Reloaded or steel-cased ammunition is prohibited in all TOTS courses.
Q: Are rentals available if I don't own a suitable firearm? A: [Insert Your Rental Policy Here: e.g., "Yes, limited rentals are available for $XX fee. Please notify us at least one week in advance."]
Q: What is Simunitions/Force-on-Force training? A: Force-on-Force training involves using non-lethal marking cartridges (Simunitions) in a realistic, scenario-based environment (like a Shoot House or Scenario Day). This allows students to experience the high-stress, dynamic reality of a defensive encounter without the risk of live fire. It is crucial for testing tactics and decision-making under pressure.
Q: Are the Live Fire Shoot House courses safe? A: Absolutely. Our Live Fire Shoot House training (Handgun 20, 21) is conducted under the strictest safety protocols developed through years of elite training. Classes are kept extremely small, instructor-to-student ratios are very high, and every movement is cleared and supervised by a Range Master Instructor to ensure maximum safety while providing the highest level of realism.
